Not All Digital Hearing Aids are the Same
The word “digital” is truly one of the most important words of the last decade. Digitalization of data, typically visual or sound data, involves breaking the information into tiny bits that can be re-created with tremendous accuracy. It has revolutionized cell phones, home movies, the way music is played - just about every auditory and visual medium possible.
There are essentially three different categories of digital hearing aids:
1. Hearing aids that process sound digitally. This is all they do. They take the incoming sound and process it in small digital bits.
2. Hearing aids that process sound digitally and are digitally programmable. They not only process sound digitally, they also allow the power of the hearing aid to be adjusted in frequency bands. This capability enables a hearing aid to be specifically programmed for a specific hearing loss. Should the hearing loss change, this program can be easily modified.
3. Hearing aids that digitally process sound, can be programmed and also have a noise reduction feature. These hearing aids have a noise reduction algorithm that helps you hear more clearly in noisy situations. The sensitivity of this feature can be programmed as well. Often they will also have other advanced features such as multiple programs for different listening environments, feedback control and wind-noise cancellation.
Understanding what the different levels of digital hearing aids can and cannot do for you is important. A hearing aid that processes sound digitally but does not have the programmable features may cost less, but may sound no better than an even less expensive analog hearing aid. Only by having the programmable feature can you ensure that your hearing aid can be adjusted for your specific hearing loss now and in the future.
It is also important to understand the relationship between circuit sophistication and price. The more features a digital hearing aid has the more it will cost. When comparing hearing aids offered by different companies, match up the features, not the prices, to ensure you’re getting the most features for your dollar. Prices for the same level of technology can vary by hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Also, make certain you’re purchasing digital hearing aids that have the features to match your lifestyle. There is no sense in paying for programming options that you will never use.
